Project Overview & Goals

The "Bike the Pike" initiative represents a new era for Chester Pike, born from the collaborative efforts of the Chester Pike Corridor Improvement Partners (CPCIP) and five participating boroughs. This project is a dual-track effort: the grand opening of a 7.2-mile dedicated bike route on May 30 and a comprehensive streetscaping program designed to revitalize the physical corridor.

By combining high-visibility event programming with permanent infrastructure improvements—including wayfaring signage, flowering trees, and ornamental amenities—the CPCIP aims to:

  • Establish a "Cycling Corridor" Identity: Use streetscaping to create a cohesive, attractive environment that signals to regional visitors that they have entered a premier recreational and commercial destination.
  • Promote Sustainable Infrastructure: Encourage safe transit and local commerce through revitalized streetscapes that connect the boroughs of Glenolden, Norwood, Prospect Park, Ridley Park, and Sharon Hill.

Historical Significance & America250 Alignment

Chester Pike is not merely a modern road; it is "Ye Olde King’s Highway," one of the oldest and most historically significant paths in the United States. As we approach the America250 celebration, our planned investments serve as a functional tribute to the history that shaped our nation:

  • The Path to Independence: In 1776, this pike was the critical path for delegates like John Morton and Caesar Rodney as they traveled to Philadelphia to sign the Declaration of Independence. Our proposed wayfaring signs will guide modern residents along this same historic "Independence Trail."
  • A Presidential Welcome: To honor this "Presidential Highway"—frequently traveled by George Washington—we are proposing Welcome Sign planting beds and flowering trees. These natural landmarks will beautify the corridor and restore the prestige of this colonial-era thoroughfare.
  • Restoring the Post Road: Historically known as the "Great Southern Post Road," the Pike was a vital artery for communication. Our commitment to high-quality streetscaping elements (such as uniform, durable trash receptacles) will improve the daily experience of the corridor while respecting its historic character.
